Steep Rock Tunnel

Painted on location on a hot day in July. It is 40 by 30 inches. This subject is one of my earliest memories; a vivid recollection of riding through this tunnel as a young child top down, back seat, 1949 Buick convertible. It is in oil on linen canvas.

The morning light strikes the exposed cut rock in a crystalline refraction to entice the viewer into the tunnel. A damp chill in drafts cooled the humid air as if the mountain was breathing and alive.

It is in my DeVoe Gallery Collection in Bridgewater. price $18,000

(This tunnel was for The Shepaug Railroad that once stopped in Washington Depot., Ct. Now a treasured feature of Steep Rock Preserve. It is well worth a visit. Walk through the Tunnel and be transformed)
